Fibre Varieties
Exlite Fibre
Exlite fibre is concentrated from the yellow field pea. Exlite Fibre is high in fibre (soluble and insoluble) and mineral content, such as iron and calcium. Exlite is a natural product where the fibre has been processed without any chemical extraction or modification.
The new Dietary Recommended Intakes (DRIs) recommend 21 grams of dietary fibre for adult women and 30 grams for men. Functional fibres are highlighted with the new DRIs and Exlite fibre is an example of a functional fibre. Exlite Fibre is finely ground and tasteless, thus excellent material for increasing the fibre level in a variety of products such as breads, rolls, muffins, cookies, breakfast cereals, pasta products, snack foods, and specialty health foods and beverages. Exlite is easily substituted (up to 25%) for wheat flour in cookies, cakes and muffins creating products with up to 4 grams of fibre per serving. The low caloric content of Exlite is an excellent way to add fibre and decrease caloric intake.
BBG - Barley β-glucan Concentrate
BBG Barley β-glucan Concentrate is made with unqiue dry processing from the
highest quality waxy, hulless barley grains. These non-GMO grains have been
specially bred to yield the highest levels of healthy ß-glucan. As a
result, BBG is the richest source of naturally healthy barley ß-glucans of
their kind available on the market. Since we do not use chemical
processing, the best bioactive features of the natural grain are maintained
in the product.
Uses in Foods and Beverages
Barley Beta-glucan Concentrate is an excellent functional ingredient in a wide range of food and beverage applications. It is, first and foremost, the richest source of concentrated natural beta glucan soluble fibre available, a well known way to make foods and beverages healthier. Barley endosperm is recognized as a very low Gi food (Gi = 26), with ß-glucans and other complex carbohydrates helping to make it low in available carbohydrates and high in fibre.
As a dry cereal powder, it is a high solubility ingredient that becomes a strong hydrocolloid that helping to increase the viscosity, texture and water binding capacity of a product, while also giving the mouth feel of fat. And, of course, it is bland in flavor, light cream in color, and a fine cereal-based flour that easily blends into most applications where cereal ingredients are typically used.
Applications vary widely from breads and baked goods to viscous beverages, from fruit fillings to pasta, from snack foods to yogurts, and from bars to breakfast cereals.
Proven Healthy Ingredient
Barley ß-glucans have been widely studied in dozens of respected clinical trials around the world in the last 25 years. These studies confirm a set of remarkable benefits to human health and nutrition, when ß-glucans are added to the diet. The U.S. FDA awarded barley beta-glucan a new health claim for reducing cardiovascular disease risks, based on this evidence. In fact, several modern, chronic, health problems are positively affected by small amounts of ß-glucan in the diet. Studies indicate 3 grams or more daily can help lower cholesterol by as much as 20%. And blood sugar cycles show lower peaks and longer periods of better energy balance. This reflects a very low Glycemic Index in BBG which slows the release and rate of absorption of sugars into your blood stream.
As the ß-glucans from BBG enter the body in foods, these fibres form a thick fluid matrix in the digestive system. Along the way they trap fats and lipids, sugars and excess calories, as well as the bile acids that affect cholesterol levels. Since they are non-digestible, some of these materials are simply conveyed out of digestive tract and are never absorbed. This helps in weight loss or control, and also helps to keep the digestive tract working at peak efficiency. And the best news of all is that those bile acids being swept away have to be replaced by the liver, which takes harmful LDL cholesterol out of the bloodstream to create new bile acid.
